A NEW MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR CURRENT COLLECTORS FOR TRAINS AND LIGHT RAIL

Investment is sought for the production and marketing of a novel material for use as sliding electrical contacts in electrical trains. These parts are replaced continuously and each train uses 400 to 600 such parts per year.

The copper-graphite composite material (CGCM), which has been tested in the laboratory in Australia and patented internationally in more than 30 countries including Japan, USA and Europe, significantly reduces operating costs of electrically powered trains and therefore has an excellent chance of penetration into the market.

The conductivity of these materials is in the range of 55 - 80 IACS (Copper is 100 IACS). Materials currently in use have IACS values below 10. The difference in conductivity translates into power savings and reduced arcing.

Microstructure of the Carbon-Graphite Composite Material (CGCM), consisting of a matrix of pure copper with embedded islands of graphite. During sliding of the contact material on the trolley wire this microstructure forms a lubricating layer at the contact interface, producing a very low friction coefficient and very low wear.

Unlike other materials used for this application, the matrix is made of pure copper and its electrical conductivity is close to that of Cu.

CGCMs present the following significant advantages compared with materials currently in use by train operators:

·       Reduced power consumption with expected savings between 15-30% of present usage.

·       Reduced arcing during operation; this property is considered very important for train operation and at present is a major cause of failure in trolley wire. The arcing performance of the new material is significantly better because of its superior electrical conductivity.

·       Very low wire wear, lifetime of trolley wire between replacements increased by at least 15 years. In lab tests, no measurable wear was observed after 100,000km sliding.

·       CGCMs are also environmentally friendlier than other contact materials currently in use, because they eliminate the use of environmental pollutants (greases or graphite powder in lubricants, lead in metals).

Once operational, the company is expected to start being profitable in its second year, growing at a rate of more than 100% per year.

This link leads to a recent technical article about this invention, published in the journal "Wear" vol. 249, (2001)pp. 626-636.
